The Virgin and Child (1936) by Mainie Jellett

Painted in 1936, The Virgin and Child brings Jellett's systematic cubist method to a devotional subject: mother and child composed through the translation and rotation of interlocking planes of colour. It belongs to the religious strand of her mature work — devotional in feeling, and built on the same geometric discipline as her abstract painting.

Mainie Jellett (1897-1944), born in Dublin, studied under William Orpen before training in Paris with Andre Lhote and Albert Gleizes. With Evie Hone she exhibited the first abstract paintings shown in Ireland in 1923, and went on to found the Irish Exhibition of Living Art. Her work hangs in the National Gallery of Ireland.
