About the Artist
Mildred Anne Butler (1858–1941) was among Ireland’s first professional women artists, exhibiting widely and
selling her work successfully throughout her career. Born and raised at Kilmurry House, Thomastown,
County Kilkenny, she drew lifelong inspiration from the fields, gardens, and wildlife surrounding her home.
Her paintings combine precise draughtsmanship with dramatic light effects and a striking sense of immediacy.
A review in The Athenaeum on 5 May 1897 remarked that her “pictures command attention by the massing
and breadth of their chiaroscuro.” This atmospheric scene is typical of her style, highlighting her remarkable
sensitivity to trees, birds, and fleeting moments in nature.
