A beautifully free floral study — "boldly stated but well judged," as the critic Aidan Dunne put it — with soft colours and a bright, light-filled tonality. O'Conor could be prone to over-working a canvas; there is no sign of it here. The handling is loose and assured, the palette gentler than the saturated colour of his Breton landscapes.
Born in Co Roscommon to a land-owning family and raised in Dublin, O'Conor trained at the Metropolitan School of Art before leaving for Paris around 1886–87 to study in the atelier of Carolus-Duran. From there he made his way to the artists' colony at Pont-Aven in Brittany, where he met and befriended Gauguin on the painter's return from the South Seas in 1894. Financially independent, he settled in France for good, staying close to the latest developments in French painting while remaining casual about exhibiting his own. Long under-estimated, he is now recognised as a fine Post-Impressionist whose work spans landscape, still life, figures and interiors — and hangs in the National Gallery of Ireland.
