The Stag Hunt by Francis Danby | Irish Romantic Art Print

A stag breaks for open country with the hunt behind it, small against a great sweep of land, weather and sky — the chase is the pretext; the scale of the place is the subject.

Danby was born near Wexford in 1793 and trained at the Dublin Society's drawing schools. In 1813 he left for London with two fellow students, George Petrie and James Arthur O'Connor; when the money ran out, he and O'Connor walked to Bristol, selling watercolours on the road. He stayed, and went on to paint the vast biblical storms — The Deluge among them, now in Tate — that made him John Martin's great rival.
