Pont-Aven, Brittany, 1891 or thereabouts. Roderic O'Conor had only just arrived in the artists' colony when he found his subject: not the town's winding wooded paths, but the River Aven itself, rushing past its old mill races through the Bois d'Amour.
The Rushing Stream shows O'Conor working out a new way of painting altogether. He crops the sky from the composition entirely, focusing tight on water and riverbank, and lays down short, directional strokes of unblended colour — pale blue through the current, Venetian red warming the tree trunks — that follow the flow of the stream rather than describing it literally. It's an early instance of the 'striped' technique he was developing under the influence of Van Gogh, whose brother Theo O'Conor had met in Paris the previous year. Within six months, that same method would reach full expression in his celebrated Yellow Landscape, Pont-Aven, now in the Tate.
Roderic O'Conor (1860–1940) was one of the few Irish artists working at the forefront of European Post-Impressionism. His work hangs in the National Gallery of Ireland, the Tate, and major collections worldwide.
