One tree turns red-orange at its crown while the rest of the grove holds green. Marsh has painted the exact moment of change — the season mid-turn, light breaking through a blue-white sky, the grass below still luminous with summer. You can feel the air in it.
Clare Marsh (1875–1923) was one of the quietly serious painters of her generation — a friend of John Butler Yeats, a professor at Alexandra College, working in oil at a time when that alone set her apart. This small, unhurried sketch shows exactly why the National Gallery of Ireland kept it.

Sketch of Trees is by the Irish artist Clare Marsh (1875–1923), a Dublin painter who shared a studio with John Butler Yeats, kept his practice going while he was in New York, and died at forty-seven with her reputation barely made. It is a small, rapid study of trees. The National Gallery of Ireland records no date for it, so none is given here. The original is oil on card and unusually small — 25.5 × 19 cm — and is held by the National Gallery of Ireland (NGI.4690), presented in 2001. This print is an open edition, made to order and shipped worldwide.
