Brittany, 1898. Roderic O'Conor had just returned to Le Pouldu, the wild coastal outpost where the Pont-Aven painters gathered, and set out on a series of over thirty seascapes made over the following two years.
Red Rocks and Sea is one of the largest and most fully resolved of that series. O'Conor toured Finistère's remotest granite coastline — as far as Belle-Île, where Monet himself had painted a decade earlier — turning rock, foam and water into bands of pure, unmixed colour: pink, purple, red, orange and turquoise against a violet-green sea. His friend and fellow painter Armand Seguin urged him to exhibit the whole series together, writing that it would show “your research, your burst of energy... the new beauty of your art.”
Roderic O'Conor (1860–1940) was born in County Roscommon and became one of the few Irish painters working at the centre of the Pont-Aven school alongside Gauguin. His work hangs in the National Gallery of Ireland, the Tate, and major collections worldwide.
