Nudes Dancing Round a Fountain by Mainie Jellett
A circle of dancing figures set around a fountain, the movement carried by geometric form rather than by naturalistic drawing. The subject is close to myth, but the construction is the disciplined cubist method Jellett brought back from Paris — the sense of rhythm comes from the underlying order rather than from loose handling.
Mainie Jellett (1897-1944), born in Dublin, studied under William Orpen before training in Paris with Andre Lhote and Albert Gleizes. With Evie Hone she exhibited the first abstract paintings shown in Ireland in 1923, and went on to found the Irish Exhibition of Living Art. Her work hangs in the National Gallery of Ireland.
