A blunt Irish seanfhocal with no room for argument: health outranks riches, full stop.
What it means
Is fearr an tsláinte ná na táinte — health is better than wealth. The literal is stranger and better than the translation: táinte is the plural of táin, a drove or herd of cattle, as in Táin Bó Cúailnge. Wealth in early Ireland was counted in cattle, so "the herds" came to mean riches, and the proverb turns on the rhyme between sláinte and táinte. The t in an tsláinte is correct and is not a typo: sláinte is a feminine noun beginning with s followed by a vowel, so it takes a t-prefix after the definite article, and the t is silent. This print is an open edition, made to order and shipped worldwide.
