The Galway hooker — black-hulled, russet-sailed — worked Galway Bay for generations, carrying turf, kelp and cargo across water that doesn't forgive carelessness. The design hasn't changed much since; there was no reason to fix what already worked.

About this work

This is a photographic print of a Galway hooker under sail — the traditional working boat of Galway Bay, black-hulled from the tar used to seal it, with sails dyed a deep russet red. Hookers carried turf, kelp and cargo along the Connemara coast and across to the Aran Islands and County Clare. The type is known in Irish as bád mór, with the smaller gleoiteog and púcan built on the same lines. This print is an open edition, made to order and shipped worldwide.
