About this work

This portrait of Daniel O'Connell (1775–1847) as Lord Mayor of Dublin is by the Irish artist William Henry Holbrooke, who was working between about 1821 and 1848. O'Connell — the Liberator, who won Catholic Emancipation in 1829 — became the first Catholic Lord Mayor of Dublin since the seventeenth century, serving in 1841–42, and the image shows him in the mayoral chain. What the National Gallery of Ireland holds is a lithograph with watercolour on paper, sheet 46.5 × 32.7 cm (NGI.10983), purchased in 1913. This print is an open edition, made to order and shipped worldwide.
