An Abstract Composition dates from around 1926, the height of Jellett's pioneering abstract period. Arcs and planes of colour rotate around a central point, translated and multiplied according to the Cubist principles she had absorbed in Paris - a composition built on rhythm rather than representation.

Mainie Jellett (1897-1944) was a pioneer of Irish modernism. After studying in London and then in Paris under André Lhote and Albert Gleizes, she introduced Cubism and pure abstraction to Ireland, exhibited some of the first abstract paintings seen in the country, and helped found the Irish Exhibition of Living Art.

About this work

An Abstract Composition is by the Irish artist Mainie Jellett (1897–1944), who studied under William Orpen in Dublin, Walter Sickert in London and then André Lhote and Albert Gleizes in Paris, and brought cubism and pure abstraction back to Ireland. Planes of colour are translated and rotated across a long horizontal field by the method Gleizes taught her. The National Gallery of Ireland records no date for the picture, so none is given here. The original is oil on canvas, 39 × 115 cm, and hangs in the National Gallery of Ireland (NGI.4317), bequeathed by Miss R. Kirkpatrick in 1978. This canvas print is an open edition, made to order and shipped worldwide.
