Edwin Hayes specialised in marine painting, drawing on real knowledge of sailing and Dublin Bay's yacht racing culture — the water rendered with a sailor's understanding of it, not just a painter's.
About this work
A View of Dublin Bay is by the marine painter Edwin Hayes (1819–1904). Born in Bristol, he was brought to Dublin as a child, trained at the Royal Dublin Society schools and worked as a ship's cook on an Atlantic crossing to learn the sea — the National Gallery of Ireland catalogues his nationality as British, though his working life was largely Irish. The gallery records no date for this picture. The original is oil on board and small, 21 × 31 cm, and is held by the National Gallery of Ireland (NGI.1054), bequeathed in 1940. This print is an open edition, made to order and shipped worldwide.
