Father of W.B. Yeats and Jack B. Yeats — and a remarkable portrait painter in his own right.
John Butler Yeats (1839–1922) drew the faces of the Irish Literary Revival with psychological honesty and a draughtsman's grace: Synge, Lady Gregory, John O'Leary, George Moore, Maud Gonne, and his own children. The National Gallery of Ireland holds 103 works by him. The portraits are irreplaceable documents of a golden era, and paintings of real beauty quite apart from their historical weight.
